Overview The EKG Technician performs clinical, clerical, inventory, and performance improvement activities related to electrocardiographic testing, including physical and computerized EKGs, Holter and event monitor management, and related documentation and coordination. Responsibilities Clinical: Perform physical and computerized EKGs; attach Holter and event monitor monitoring devices; scan Holter monitors and enroll events through a third-party vendor; enter medical orders into the medical record for outpatient testing as necessary; these tests are performed in routine, emergency, and alert situations. Clerical: Reconcile orders, report and finalize electronic ECGs; operate an electronic EKG Management System to ensure proper storage and retrieval of patient information; edit and finalize reports accurately; verify departmental charge revenue; receive and act upon phone requests from medical staff for retrieval of procedure reports. Inventory: Maintain adequate inventory of supplies needed for all testing procedures. Performance Improvement: Participate in hospital and departmental ongoing Performance Improvement activities and comply with actions taken to ensure high quality patient care. Qualifications CPR certification High school diploma/GED required Knowledge and use of computerized electrocardiographic equipment; ability to perform an EKG procedure, operate the EKG machine, attach a Holter monitor, bio-impedance, and recognize abnormal rhythms; typically acquired through 1-2 months of on-the-job training. Experience in stress testing, pacemaker follow-up, and scanning Holter tapes generally acquired over 1-2 years. Skill in patient/family teaching regarding wearing and returning a Holter Monitor, recording symptoms, instructing patients in proper use of event monitors, and explaining procedures to patient and/or family. The incumbent primarily works with adult and geriatric populations.
